The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Bosnia and Herzegovina announces the results of the public call for local governments (LGs) to participate in the ‘Accelerating Agenda 2030 through Governance and Sustainable Growth’ programme (SDG 2030 BiH), funded by Sweden. A total of 26 municipalities and cities across Bosnia and Herzegovina will receive expert and technical support to improve local governance and social services.
Protocols of Cooperation with the selected municipalities and cities will be signed on 19 October 2026, the opening day of SDG Week in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The signing will mark the official start of a four-year partnership under the SDG 2030 BiH programme.
The public call, which was open from 29 June to 20 July 2026, received 54 applications. All applications met the requirements for technical evaluation, which was conducted in accordance with the criteria set out in the public call. In addition to the scores, the selection took into account geographical distribution and opportunities for peer learning and efficient delivery of support.
Selected local governments
A total of 23 local governments have been selected to participate in the three support packages implemented by UNDP:
LOT 1: Mentor local governments, examples of good practice
Gradiška, Trebinje, Tuzla and Tešanj.
LOT 2: Local governments with strong development potential
Višegrad, Bijeljina, Laktaši, Derventa, Zvornik, Orašje, Ilijaš, Vogošća, Lukavac, Doboj, Sanski Most, Ilidža, Livno and Posušje.
LOT 3: Support for underdeveloped local governments
Bosanski Petrovac, Jajce, Rudo, Vukosavlje and Petrovo.
Support to improve social services
Under the programme component implemented by UNICEF, eight local governments will receive support to improve social services: Goražde, Istočno Novo Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Gradiška, Zvornik, Livno, Orašje and Laktaši.
Five of these local governments will also receive support through LOT 1 and LOT 2, while Goražde, Istočno Novo Sarajevo and Banja Luka are additionally included through the social services component. This brings the total number of municipalities and cities receiving support under this public call to 26.
Support tailored to local priorities
Support will be tailored to the needs and development priorities of the selected local governments. Depending on the support package, activities may include aligning strategic planning with the Sustainable Development Goals, preparing voluntary local reviews of progress towards the Goals, programme budgeting, grant and public asset management, development project management, urban transformation and improvements to social services.
UNDP thanks all municipalities and cities for their interest and the effort invested in preparing their applications. Local governments not selected under this public call will be considered should additional opportunities for their participation arise during programme implementation, in line with programme priorities and available resources.
